CONVERSATIONS ON CLAY
with Alicia Jimenez and Simone Bodmer- Turner
February 19-23, 2020 (5 days, 4 nights)
This 5-day Arts & Lectures program looks at the processes, people, communities & places influenced and driven by clay as a material and resource.
Artists & ceramicists Simone Bodmer-Turner (New York) and Alicia Jimenez (Oaxaca) will be our guests for this week — providing an intimate look at their practices, work and how each have been influenced by tradition & place as well as contemporary art & design. In addition, we will be visiting and conversing daily with other local artisans and artists working with clay to explore comparative perspectives and processes.
We will look at clay in all its forms — paying attention to origins and place, to form and shape, to utility and design, and to the ongoing use of barro as creative and personal expression.
Each morning there will be an optional hands-on hour, working with the material as a grounding practice to begin the day led by Simone or Alicia. This will be followed by a late-morning / early afternoon visit to a nearby town with local artisans. Participants are on their own for lunch and late afternoon.
Each evening we will come together with local artists in various locations to discuss their work, have drinks, and dine together.
